Frequently asked questions

1) WHAT DOES A SPORTS THERAPIST DO / WHAT'S YOUR QUALIFICATION?

The levels of qualification for Sports Therapists differ significantly. Standards vary from therapists who have done a part time 12 week course to a full time 3 year Degree course.

The Sports Therapists at The Ringwood Clinic have all completed a three year full time degree course and passed with Honours. We are regulated and insured by the Society of Sports Therapists. As part of our membership we must complete ongoing CPD (Continued Professional Development) training.

We are qualified to deal with most sports, occupational and general injuries.

2) WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INJURY TREATMENT AND SPORTS MASSAGE?

Injury treatment involves an in-depth look at your injury or problem. During the initial appointment we will go through the 'history' of your problem, look at your posture and carry out a number of physical tests to determine the cause of your injury. From there we devise a treatment plan and will start treatment right away.

During sports massage sessions we will not aim to diagnose any injuries. These sessions are often used as a regular treatment to aid recovery and ease tight muscles (neck, shoulders, lower back, calfs etc).

3) WHAT DO I NEED TO WEAR?

For lower body problems (hip, knee, ankles etc) please wear shorts or underwear you're comfortable to be treated in.

For upper body problems (neck, back, shoulders etc) females please wear a strappy top/bra that you're comfortable to be treated in.

N/B Every effort is made to make you feel comfortable during your treatment - towels are used to cover areas of your body that are not being examined or treated.

4) HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

This will vary largely depending on a number of factors including:
  • Your age
  • The area effected
  • Your current fitness levels
  • The type of injury (overuse, chronic, acute)
  • The severity
  • The length of time you've had the problem
However, following your initial treatment, where possible we will give you an idea of how many treatments you can expect to need.

5) HOW DO I PAY?

Cash or cheque

6) CAN I CLAIM FOR MY TREATMENT THROUGH MY INSURANCE COMPANY?

Unfortunately at this time you cannot claim back any of your treatment cost with us.

7) IS SPORTS MASSAGE PAINFUL?

This depends on the purpose of the sports massage. For instance; when re-aligning 'scar tissue' deeper pressure is needed. However, massage following a specific sports event may use less pressure.

Some massage can be uncomfortable, but should never be painful. Each individual can tolerate different levels of pressure and, for that reason the treatment is tailored to your needs.

8) HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE SPORTS MASSAGE?

We have a number of clients who have sports massage on a regular basis, as a 'maintenance' treatment to help prevent injury. Sometimes we have clients who have sports massage three times a week in the run up to an event; others come once a fortnight or once a month. Many clients have massage only when they have an injury.

Ideally we recommend regular 'maintenance' sessions as this means we can work at preventing any problems before they occur.

We offer a 10% discount on block bookings of sports massage (Packages of 6+)

9) HOW LONG DO TREATMENTS LAST?

Treatments and sports massage sessions can be booked in 1 hour and 1/2 hour time periods.

10) HOW LONG WILL I NEED?

This depends on a number of factors; generally we encourage most people to book an hour session for the initial appointment. This allows time for us to discuss your injury in detail, devise a treatment plan and start treatment right away.

There after, with follow up treatments shorter sessions are often just as effective.

If you are unsure how long to book the best thing to do is to pick up the phone and give as a call. We can then have a chat about what the best course of action is for you.

11) HOW MUCH DOES TREATMENT / MASSAGE COST?

1 Hour: 42
1/2 Hour: 28
